News Line: Chairman's New Year Message to Members

"As we move from one decade to another, I would like to take this opportunity to send Best Wishes and Season’s Greetings to you, our members.  The Christmas break is also a good time to reflect on the past and look forward to the future.

The last 18 Months has seen difficult economic conditions for all our members and we appreciate your continued support.  The Council of the Association has taken this period to introduce a number of significant changes to make it stronger into the future:-

  • We have re-organised to ensure that the Association is more flexible and better able to address members' needs and requirements
  • This web site has been substantially overhauled with a new Library section, and
  • We've started a public discussion forum on the LinkedIn social networking site

Although we see that the changes we have put in place are starting to make a difference we canvassed the membership to see what you wanted the Association to do in to the future.

The Association continues to represent the views and needs of all the memberships in a large number committees and decision making groups.  This is vital work as access is not open to individuals or the smaller organisations to represent themselves and our recent survey reaffirmed your support for this work.  Details of those committees and working we attend on your behalf are listed on the webpage and where minutes are available they are posted in the Members' section of the Library.  If you'd like a specific item raised at one of these meetings, please contact the relevant person.

I am very pleased to see the continued growth of our SME membership particularly as the UAS industry is still in its early days in comparison to manned aviation and thus very much needs the innovation and energy that these organizations can bring.  Another exciting development is that the UAVS initiated ASTRAEA programme may get approval for its second stage in the New Year, enabling continued research in to vital areas such as Sense and Avoid, Autonomy, Communications and Security, HCI and Prognostics and Health Management.  The Association will continue to represent the membership on the ASTRAEA Executive Steering Board.

The members only events in 2009 have been a great success with visits to the Thales Watchkeeper and QinetiQ Zephyr facilities and an extremely informative day at the British Antarctic Survey discussing UAS operations in this harsh environment.  We plan to continue these events in 2010: your suggestions will be welcome.  In fact any suggestions made through the comments box on this website come straight to me and I want to hear from you on any aspect of the Association’s activities.

I would like to close by wishing all our members a prosperous New Year and I look forward to meeting more of you personally in 2010."

Gary Clayton - Chairman

UAS Operations in Antarctica
UAVS organised a mini-conference in Cambridge, UK, on Wednesday 4 November 2009 at British Antarctic Survey reviewing opportunities for UAS operations in Antarctica and the latest concerns from and latest developments within the CAA on future UAS regulation.  British Antarctic Survey (BAS) first flew a UAV in Antarctica in 2007 and is looking to utilise UAS for its atmospheric research in remote locations, in some cases over 900 nm from the launch point.  Long endurance, reliability and resilience to the extreme conditions are prerequisites for any new UAS offering.  BAS is also considering hosting a small UAS flying demonstration in September 2010 and was looking for both CAA and UAVS input on the requirements, possibilities and scope of such a demonstration.  Over 30 delegates attended on what was deemed by all to be a very successful event.  A full written report and a copy of the proceedings are available to members.
